United Way & Labor: A Lasting Partnership

United Way and organized labor have stood side by side since 1942. Born out of the rebuilding efforts after World War II, our partnership was an innovative way to strengthen communities and create opportunity for working families.

Back then, United Way (then known as Community Chests and Councils) and national labor organizations (the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations) pioneered payroll deduction. That simple idea grew into lasting labor representation on United Way boards, collaborative fundraising, and a shared commitment to community development.

Today, unions continue to be strong partners in workplace campaigns, encouraging members to give and volunteer. Together, we’ve built a tradition of impact that continues to shape lives here in Champaign County.

Labor Day Parade

United Way of Champaign County is proud to join our local labor partners in the annual Labor Day Parade. Marching side by side each year is a celebration of our shared commitment to community, and a reminder that united, we can build a stronger, more connected Champaign County.

Labor Day Parade Sponsorships Now Available

We invite you to celebrate the hardworking men and women who build and serve our community. This year’s theme, “Building the Foundation for Mental Health," highlights the importance of mental well-being.

Proceeds will benefit the United Way of Champaign County, supporting mental health services and the 211 Helpline.

Did you know: In 2021, 56 out of every 100,000 male construction workers died by suicide, underscoring the need for greater support and awareness.

We are seeking sponsors to help make this event a success. Your sponsorship will demonstrate your commitment to Champaign County’s workforce while providing valuable visibility for your business.

Please contact Penny Hood (penny@unitedwaychampaign.org) with any sponsorship questions. Sponsorships can be paid online or by making a check out to the United Way of Champaign County (5 Dunlap Court, Savoy, IL 61874).

The AFL-CIO of Champaign County helps spread the word about United Way’s 211 Help Line by distributing free informational cards. They’ve also welcomed our team to speak directly with union members, who are often the first to connect with families in crisis.
